Apex Legends Season 20: Breakout is nearing its end, and today, developer Respawn Entertainment gave players a taste of what’s coming in Season 21 via a new episode of Stories From The Outlands, entitled Based On A True Story. The episode introduces players to Season 21’s debut Legend, a portal-hopping anomaly who goes by the name Alter.

Narrated by Alter herself, Based On A True Story seems to imply that Alter is not from the same dimension as the other Legends (save for Wraith, who is also from another dimension). The episode reveals that Alter’s parents are dead–and may have been murdered–but verifiable information is sparse in terms of her origins, and she seems to revel in the fact that she’s an enigma–and a potentially unreliable narrator.

Throughout the episode, Alter reveals she’s a highly skilled fighter, and has been trained as an assassin by a mysterious organization. Physically, she resembles a sort of cyberpunk tiefling, complete with horn-like antennae on her head and a Doc Ock-esque mechanical arm sprouting out of her lower back like a tail. Though she does appear to be mostly human, her voice has a bit of an inorganic tone to it, similar to the voices of robotic Legends like Ash, Pathfinder, and Revenant.

Alter never gives viewers a clear answer regarding her identity, but she does reveal that she has spent time living in a manner similar to Bloodhound.

“For years, I was a hunter of the old ways,” she declares, referencing Bloodhound’s episode of Stories From The Outlands. “Also, I had a bird.”

Alter apparently shares Bloodhound’s affinity for ravens.

But a fondness for avian familiars isn’t the only similarity she shares with some of Apex’s other Legends. She’s seen entering and exiting portals that have the appearance of shattered glass–an interesting detail, especially given the fact that Wraith entered this dimension by jumping through shattered glass, as seen in her own episode of Stories From The Outlands.

“Who am I? I’m the one who’s there at the end,” Alter declares in the final seconds of the trailer, as she drops a photo of fellow Legend Horizon (and her son, Newton) onto the ground. “Or am I?”

Definitive answers regarding Alter’s origins are nowhere to be found in this episode of Stories From The Outlands, but the animated short seems imply that she may be an amalgamation of various pre-existing Legends, and that she has some sort of connection to Horizon (and possibly Bloodhound, Wraith, and even Revenant as well). Still, Based On A True Story does reveal one verifiable fact about Alter: She’s fluent in Cantonese, which she can be heard speaking near the episode’s midpoint.

As for the rest of Alter’s background, it seems Apex Legends players will have to wait until Season 21: Upheaval goes live to get the full story.
