Embracer has released its latest earnings briefing, and included in the report is some accounting for how the Alone in the Dark reboot performed commercially.
The company said the game didn’t do as well as it hoped (via IGN), recording “softer-than-expected performance.” Embracer used this language to describe the commercial performance of Alone in the Dark and Outcast: A New Beginning, both of which were published by THQ Nordic.
Embracer never said what its sales expectations for Alone in the Dark were in the first place, nor did the company reveal a sales number for the game now. The title launched on March 20 and did not crack the top 20 best-seller chart for March in the US.
The Alone in the Dark reboot stars David Harbour (Black Widow, Stranger Things) and Jodie Comer (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Killing Eve). Prior to launch, Harbour discussed how Alone in the Dark was not everything he hoped it would be from an acting perspective.
Harbour also said he never worked in the same space with Comer on the game, and he said this was “tragic.” He said Alone in the Dark is a “wacky franchise” and that some of the games in the series were “terrible.”
He added that the motion-capture process wasn’t a “full-born” experience. It was “just me and some dots on my face in a room,” he said.
In other Embracer news, the company recently conducted a cost-cutting and restructuring program that included mass layoffs, game cancellations, and studio closures. Embracer will ditch that name soon, as the company instead splits into three distinct companies.
Lars Wingefors, the CEO of Embracer, is staying on with the company and will become the top boss at all three companies. He has said he deserves criticism for what he did that led to this situation, but told investors it was the right thing to do.
