PlayStation Teases Super Bowl Ad With God Of War Hammer

The official PlayStation Canada Instagram account is teasing a forthcoming PlayStation-related announcement or reveal of some kind for the Super Bowl this weekend.

The account posted an image of Thor’s Mjolnir hammer and a fake Arizona news broadcast ticker that says, “Fimbulwinter At The Big Game?” In Norse mythology, Fimbulwinter is a three-year period of extreme environmental change, and in this case, that would be snow falling in Glendale, Arizona, the site of Super Bowl 57 on Sunday.

“Forecast calls for a blizzard on 2.12.23,” PlayStation’s Instagram caption reads. It also attached the hashtags #LiveFromPS5 and #GodofWarRagnarok. Live From PS5 is the name of Sony’s new ad campaign for the PlayStation 5 that recently rolled out and may have teased Uncharted 5. As for God of War Ragnarok, the game is putting up massive sales numbers, but Sony has no plans to release any expansions for it.

Sony’s Live From PS5 campaign also included a real-life Leviathan axe landing in London.

Sony has yet to officially announce or confirm if it will have a Super Bowl ad this weekend during the big game, but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise. After all, with the PS5 now readily back in stock, now would seemingly be a great time for Sony to hype the PS5 and get people excited about buying one, even if 30-second ads at Super Bowl 57 cost as much as $7 million.

In 2013, Sony released a God of War Ascension ad during the Super Bowl, so it wouldn’t be uncharted territory for there to be a PlayStation ad at the big game. That trailer aired online–and not on TV during the Super Bowl broadcast.

Super Bowl 57 takes place this Sunday, February 12, with the Philadelphia Eagles taking on the Kansas City Chiefs for the title. Madden’s Super Bowl simulation predicts the Eagles to win.
